Yoga
Definitions
In order to understand
Yoga we first must know that it is not Hinduism, a religion or any
type of "Eastern mysticism". Yoga is a science and
technology of living that can be applied for a multiplicity of
purposes. The word Yoga literally means, "to control".
This entails controlling one's body, thoughts, mind, emotions,
health, stress, environment and destiny.
Yoga is a
sophisticated understanding of the nature of the body, mind and
spirit and how they interact and are dependent on each other. Yogic
science is thousands of years old and consists of the study of
several categories of knowledge. Among them are anatomy, physiology,
pathology, psychology, psychiatry, nutrition, herbology, hygiene,
philosophy and human bio-energetic systems. "Modern"
science is only recently acknowledging and incorporating the
advanced theory and application that Yoga has to offer in improving
human life.
As contemporary
"modern" science which is very young and under-developed
in comparison, becomes aware of it's limitations, Yoga is
increasingly being applied in all areas of human activities.
Yoga in its various
forms can and is being used as therapy to treat mental disorders and
physical ailments. The principles, philosophy and techniques of Yoga
are being used by "self-help experts" from Oprah to Zukav
to Van Zant to help their audiences to achieve success in their
careers, personal relationships and to create a more satisfying
existence.
